History: http://dragonage.wikia.com/wiki/Dorian_Pavus
Personality:
When Dorian first meets the Inquisitor, it's in Redcliffe's Chantry, fighting off demons that are coming out of a fade rift which has been warped by time. He asks for help in sealing it, and when the deed is done, he introduces himself properly and informs the Inquisitor of his old mentor's alliance with the Venatori, who are interested in the mark. He insists that when the Inquisition goes up against Alexius, he wants to be there to help. From the beginning, he shows his courage and conviction, though people are very resistant to trusting a Tevinter mage. When Alexius attempts to erase the Inquisitor from time, Dorian leaps into action and counters the spell, and the group gets sent into the future, Dorian is immediately reassuring, having the Inquisitor's back and insisting that he will be there to get them through it. Even after they come back and fix time, he is insistent upon staying and helping figure out who the Elder One is and putting a stop to his crazed countrymen.
From the beginning, it's clear that Dorian is charming and cultured, the very picture of the Altus he is. Growing up in a privileged household where magic was encouraged, his skills flourished into what they are, and he developed a proclivity for necromancy as well as thaumaturgy, or magical endeavors. Under Gereon Alexius, they developed a rudimentary time magic, though it was mostly in theory. He is well-read, continually criticizing Skyhold's library, though he can be found utilizing it more often than not. It is a great step down from the libraries of the Circles in Minrathous, but even with that restriction, he does what research he can in order to help the Inquisition.
Mages, particularly the ones from Tevinter, have a bad reputation, and throughout the beginning of Dorian joining the Inquisition, he is seen as the “evil Tevinter Magister” stereotype. Despite leaving his pampered life in order to do what he felt was right. There are plenty of rumors about all Magisters using blood magic, though he is vehemently not one of them, and he is quick to correct it.
For all of his outward charm and the evidently high opinion of himself that he carries, Dorian tends to be a secretive person. Most of it is due to his upbringing in Tevinter and the “shame” of being who he was, it was much easier to hide it than to truly accept it. It is a hard habit to break, sharing personal details, but with all of the flirtation and acceptance of the Inquisitor, he starts to open up. Mother Giselle tells the Inquisitor of a letter from Dorian's father, imploring him to meet the family retainer in Redcliffe and not tell Dorian about it. Despising the secrecy, he does tell Dorian and they travel to the Gull and Lantern together. When Halward himself is there, trying to reconcile and only further riling Dorian up, his obstinate nature shows through. He refuses to give in to what his father is saying, and insists that Halward's actions didn't spur him into joining the Inquisition, but that it was the right thing to do. He is fierce about his convictions, and nothing makes him change his mind.
Instead of trying to convince Dorian to hear out the man who tried to change who he was, the Inquisitor leads him out, insisting that they are done. It's when they return to Skyhold that Dorian opens up even more about why things between he and his father were so bad. He is certainly not used to the understanding he is being shown about the situation, and the fact that preferring the company of men isn't something to be reviled.
The more time he spends with the other members of the Inquisition, the more his sarcasm and wit shows through. Not that it is difficult for him to find it, because it seems to come out in almost every situation they find themselves in. It's as second nature to Dorian as using magic, and when Mother Giselle chastises him and his glib tongue, he merely replies that she would be surprised what credit his tongue gets him, serving only to push her buttons. Something else Dorian is very good at. He is very good at being the pariah of his country, and if the Tevene are good at anything, it is disguising an insult as a compliment. For as much trouble as his tongue gets him into, he can realize when he was in the wrong and apologize. He does so to Blackwall after all the bantering and quarrel when they get to know each other a bit better and come at least to a truce.
For all of his bluster and fuss, Dorian is sweet and cares deeply about the few friends he does have, and the former mentor that he had a falling out with. For all the problems, he still puts everything he can into his friendships. When he receives a letter about Felix Alexius's death, he is stricken despite knowing that his friend would die. Not being there for him is something he feels immense guilt about, and it shows in his brief interactions with Felix that the two were good friends and he does care. When his friendship with the Inquisitor grows, he is very hesitant about the nature of it, but lets himself have this relationship.
True to his status as pariah, he has a proclivity for drinking, particularly when there is something he would like to forget or is feeling poorly about. He has a preference for terrible Ferelden ale, but a bottle of wine does the trick, as well. It is another one of the bad habits that is difficult to break
